Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has filed civil penalty proceedings against Telegram in the Federal Court, alleging the platform failed to detect and remove pro-terror content including execution videos and mass shooting footage. Telegram could face penalties of up to 54.6 million Australian dollars (approximately 38 million US dollars) for failing to comply with Australia’s codes and standards. The investigation found that content reported by Australian users remained online for up to three weeks, while known footage from the 2019 Christchurch attacks and 2022 Buffalo shooting remained accessible for nearly three months. Telegram denies the allegations and stated it will contest them in court.
