SK Hynix, which controls 50 to 70% of the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, believes artificial intelligence could end the traditional boom-bust cycles that have long defined the semiconductor industry. The South Korean company has already sold out its entire 2026 memory lineup, and CEO Kwak Noh-jung warns of the most severe shortage in the sector’s history, with demand projected to significantly outpace supply through 2027 and potentially beyond 2030. SK Hynix posted record operating profit of 47 trillion won in 2025, nearly double the previous year, and its Nasdaq debut in July 2026 saw shares rise nearly 13% on the first day of trading. The company also dominates the HBM3E segment and is ramping up production of the next-generation HBM4, chips that power the data centers training large language models.
