India and China will reopen border trade through the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim starting August 1, ending a six-year suspension that began during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Around 600 registered Indian traders are set to benefit directly, along with transport operators and allied businesses in the border regions of Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. This reopening follows agreements negotiated during bilateral dialogues in 2025 between special representatives of both countries. While it is not expected to significantly alter trade volumes, which have largely been routed through maritime and other channels, it signals a notable shift in political temperature between the two Asian giants.
