Circle has acquired over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued blockchain patents from IBM, becoming the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States. The portfolio covers banking, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle plans to deploy the patents across USDC, the Circle Payments Network, its Arc blockchain, and AI-powered financial tools. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. IBM, which confirmed its partnership with Open USD—a stablecoin launched June 30 with over 140 backers including Visa, Mastercard, and Google—is backing a direct competitor to USDC.
