Indonesia’s central bank governor Perry Warjiyo resigned unexpectedly on Monday for personal reasons, sparking investor concerns about central bank independence and fiscal management. The rupiah weakened by up to 0.14% to 17,960 per dollar while the main stock index dropped as much as 0.68% before recovering to gain 0.26%. Destry Damayanti, senior deputy governor at BI, has been appointed as interim governor. The resignation comes as the central bank has faced pressure to support President Prabowo’s growth agenda while the rupiah hit a historic low in June amid global market turmoil.
