Karnataka partners with Anthropic to explore AI for governance, shifting from e-government to i-government

Karnataka, the Indian state home to Bengaluru (the country’s Silicon Valley), is exploring a partnership with Anthropic to bring artificial intelligence into public governance. On July 11, IT&BT Minister Priyank Kharge met with Anthropic India Managing Director Irina Ghose to discuss a shift toward « i-governance, » aiming to move beyond simple digitization toward AI systems capable of analyzing government datasets. Priority areas include AI skilling programs, startup incubation, and the establishment of centers of excellence. Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI models, opened a Bengaluru office in early 2026, positioning it to address the state’s need for multilingual capabilities (Kannada, Hindi, English, and other regional languages). No formal agreements had been signed as of late July 2026, with the entire project remaining exploratory.
