Nvidia, Microsoft lead 25-company coalition defending open-source AI models in letter to US policymakers

A coalition of 25 tech companies, led by Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, published a joint letter on July 24 urging US policymakers not to impose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, chose this letter for his first-ever post on X, while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also backed the effort. The signatories argue that open models enable community scrutiny, preventing single points of failure, and that US restrictions would simply push AI development abroad without reducing risk. Notably, OpenAI was not among the signatories. For the crypto sector, such restrictions could impact decentralized applications relying on AI capabilities, as remote kill switch requirements would be fundamentally incompatible with censorship-resistant blockchain protocols.
