Yuga Labs settles lawsuit against artists accused of copying its NFTs

Yuga Labs has reached a settlement in its lawsuit against artists Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen, accused of copying Bored Ape Yacht Club cartoon ape images to create derivative NFTs marketed as RR/BAYC. The case, initially ruled in Yuga Labs’ favor in 2023 with damages increased to $9 million, had been sent back to a jury trial in 2025 by an appeals court. The defense had argued parody and satire, claiming the NFTs were a critique of the original project protected under free speech laws. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
