College kids are moving into retirement communities for reasons beyond ‘cheap rent’

Daija Holliday, 25, a student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, chose to live at St. Camillus Life Plan Community, a senior living center home to more than 600 older adults. This arrangement provides her with safe and affordable housing while fostering intergenerational bonds, a natural fit for the young woman who grew up in her grandparents’ home. The students living in these communities organize game nights and teach fitness classes, creating mutually beneficial exchanges with the elderly residents. The site director noted, however, that nightlife is limited, with activities winding down by 7:30 or 8 p.m.
