24-Hour Trading: SEC and CFTC Are Actively Preparing

The SEC announced it will host a roundtable on September 17 to discuss the transition to 24-hour trading on US stock markets, addressing the necessary preparations, operational resilience, and challenges associated with this expansion. In parallel, the CFTC extended two ongoing public consultations on energy derivatives markets, respectively concerning the extension of standard futures contracts to 24/7 trading and the potential listing of perpetual contracts on energy commodities. These consultations, originally set to conclude, have been extended until August 26 to allow the CFTC to better understand the sector’s issues. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins described this development as a new era for US stock markets, while emphasizing the need to balance continuous trading with investor protection.
