Alphabet’s Gemini 4 clears pretraining, but the harder work is just beginning

Google’s Gemini 4 has completed its pretraining phase, officially launched in July 2026 as the largest such effort in company history. CEO Sundar Pichai outlined two core priorities for the model: coding and autonomous agents. Alphabet has set its 2026 capital expenditure guidance at up to $205 billion, pushing the company into negative free cash flow territory for the first time. A late-2026 release window appears most likely, roughly six months after pretraining began in July. Posttraining, the critical phase that transforms a model into a usable product, now represents the key step before any public launch.
